Understanding hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a common skeletal condition in dogs, especially large breed dogs. It happens when the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit together properly. Over time, that poor fit creates friction, instability, inflammation, and pain.

Elbow dysplasia works in a similar way. The elbow joint does not form or move correctly, which can lead to discomfort, joint damage, and arthritis.

How red light therapy works for dysplasia

Photobiomodulation, or PBM, also called red light therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), LED therapy, cold laser, and near-infrared therapy, refers to the same therapeutic category using light energy to influence cellular biology. Here is how red light therapy works: it uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate deep into the skin and tissues, promoting healing and reducing inflammation at a cellular level.

Specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light penetrate tissue and interact with the mitochondria, the energy centers inside cells. This can increase ATP production, which gives cells more energy for repair, recovery, and normal function. By penetrating deep into the skin and tissues, red light therapy promotes healing and exhibits anti inflammatory properties, helping to reduce swelling and discomfort associated with injuries or chronic conditions.

At the same time, red light therapy helps reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines. That matters because inflammation can add pressure inside swollen joints, increase discomfort, and make movement harder.
