Medcovet Frequently Asked Questions

Safety

Yes. The Luma has been independently tested and certified as safe—including for the eyes—under all conditions. It meets international safety standards. That said, we always recommend following the usage instructions for best results and to keep your pet comfortable.

Since PBM is stimulatory, PBM experts avoid treating when cancer is involved.  Please advise your veterinary care provider of any conditions that may impact treatment.

Right now there is no research on treating an animal when the pet owner has a history of cancer.  Based on the findings of treatment of pets with cancer, we think it is safe for the pet owner to treat.  When treating a patient, it is suggested to avoid treating the area that either has or had the malignancy. Likewise, when treating a pet, the pet owner should avoid illuminating areas that were affected by cancer with the typical dosages for pets.  Since there is no conclusive research, the safest thing to do is to have another user treat the patient, but based on the current research available, we believe it is safe to treat.

The Luma is a veterinary medical device and is not FDA approved for human use, so we cannot recommend or condone using it on yourself. Any personal use would be at your own risk and outside the intended purpose of the device.

Using The Luma

Luma can support healing and pain relief in a wide range of issues, including:

For most conditions, the first two weeks require a “loading dose” of 1-2 minutes per spot daily (usually about 10 minutes per day). This eventually is tapered off to fewer treatment days and shorter treatment times.  Many times, continued light therapy can lower medication doses which potentially may alleviate medication side effects

Every rental or purchase comes with a personalized treatment plan created by a licensed vet. You’ll also use our app, which shows you exactly where, how long, and how often to treat. Bonus: it updates in real-time as your pet improves. Watch the how-to video

Yes. The Luma combines red and infrared light (635nm + 850nm) to reach both surface-level inflammation and deeper tissue. It’s designed using clinical guidelines and engineered to get light where it matters—under the fur, into the tissue, and without burning.

Sometimes protocols need to be adjusted. That’s why we stay in touch. If things plateau or change, your clinician can tweak your treatment plan. You’ll always have support.

Most pet parents report seeing changes within 2–3 weeks. Every pet is different, but early signs of improvement may include increased mobility, reduced licking or chewing, better mood, or improved gait.

Each treatment is about 1–2 minutes per area. Most protocols start with a 10-minute daily session for the first 2 weeks. After that, it’s often reduced based on progress. The app walks you through everything.

It depends. For large pets (like horses), the Luma is most effective on joints or tissues within ~2 inches of the surface. Think elbows, knees, hocks—not deep hips or shoulders. For deep muscle work, higher-class lasers may be more appropriate.

No problem. The Luma’s comb attachment helps get light through thick fur. If your pet has dark fur or skin, we adjust the power settings before sending you your Luma to ensure effective treatment.

Yes! Luma has been used on ducks, donkeys, tigers, horses, and more. If it has cells, it can benefit from light therapy. As always, treatment should be guided by a clinician.

1-2″ –  The source we used was the Handbook of Laser Therapy by Michael Hamblin (our CSO). It offers a model for how light reflects through different materials (e.g. bone, blood, soft tissue).  But, this model has many variables and the best way to determine penetration is to measure it.

Below is a link to a video showing the penetration of the Luma through the hand.  This is a simple model to show how that light can reach the target tissue of a patient.

It’s in a category of its own. The Luma is technically a collimated LED device—it focuses light like a laser but disperses it by 10 cm for safety. You get the benefits of laser therapy without the risks or cost.

  • Class 1 (like Luma): Eye-safe, no goggles needed, safe for home use.
  • Class 3B: Requires goggles and some training.
  • Class 4: Not safe without goggles, not recommended for layperson use.

Yes. The Luma is small but mighty. It delivers clinically appropriate power (65 mW/cm²) and uses a patent-pending optical comb to part fur and direct light straight to the skin. It’s not about how bright it looks—it’s about effective energy delivery. Even Dr. Michael Hamblin, one of the world’s top PBM researchers, backs it.

The Luma is different from most devices in two ways. First, it has an optical comb that gets light past the fur. Second, it comes with an app and clinical support, to ensure you are getting the most out of treatment. These two features are difference makers in healing your pet.
